hi sorry i've joined this topic late but i'm new to this site and had to say something. I work in retail and when i was interviewed i kept my piercings in and for almost 2 years i have worked there without a word from anyone, all of a sudden new boss! i have to take my lip piercing out, and was sent home for having an un-natural hair colour, i feel like they are slowly stealing my identity and turning everyone into robots, a lady that has worked there for 10 years was asked to remove her nail varnish because it was too bright!!! What is the world coming to? |

I don't think i'd want to work for an employer that wouldn't hire based on tatts. It demonstrates that they consider image more important than my ability, or indeed the true facts of a situation. Mind you, that's pretty easy to say being in a proffession where it is acceptable (forensic mental health nursing).
I do take me labret out for work, but that's mostly as a security issue, as i work in a high secure hospital. I'm also aware that it might seem aggressive to some, and where my job is to engage with people it could be a barrier.
Patch1 - I like the idea of challenging society with your art. Unless we challenge discrimination it'll endure. |

dont get me started,im an adamant believer of do what u want wrong or right.theres a job out there for you marked or not,its a long way off til society falls into our way of thinking.not that i particularly care or want it.however it does and has impeeded many peoples developement in work related situations.i live in a catholicly rigid country where by the norm its heavily looked down on.but thats just more of a challenge for me as a tattooist to help change peoples opinions. |

hey im patch, another s african born then moved to the england where i lived on the south coast for 12 years.i know live in portugal where i tattoo.i like hip hop specifacally from the uk,dancehall reggae and punk,i also dj at various shindigs in the above mentioned styles as well as doing free parties here in portugal with our sound system.im always working on some new design for my next tattoo at the moment my arm is being done in a graffiti based style(having been doing graff for many years)while my back is a homage to my baby girl and my girlfriend, the back piece is in design and is a mixture of old school and graff imagery and a play on japanese styles.i love getting tattooed any time as its part of my learning process as an artist.oh i also enjoy cooking and learning about growing veggies,we have a small farm here but its a bit neglected cos i got to live in babylon for that cold hard cash im not as self sufficient as id like to be but fuck it.anyway thats it.take it sleazy |

Hi everyone. Im owen Im from South a small town Wales. Ive got a few pieces now. Ive got a cross made out of old english letters on my left upper arm and flames on my lower with rage written down the inside to remind me that my temper doesnt get me anywhere. On my right arm I have another flame on my forearm and Angela (my sis, RIP) on the inside of my arm. Ive also started my full sleeve on my right arm with some pistons. Thats all my work but more coming very soon. Any questions then please ask. Hope to hear from you soon. |

My view is that if the body is sexy by nature, tattoos can accentualte the shape of it, and make it more sexy. For example, heavily tattooed arm will accentuate the body and by creating a contrast, or the shapes can stand out if shapes and color contrasts are used well on the body. However if everything is tattooed is a homegenous blurry mass, it does no longer gives the accents. |

But to continue on this, my answer would be no if it would just be based on the personal feelings of the employer. Then is would be discrimitation.
But now that i think of it, given the situation, I would positively discrimiate for people with body mods :-) |

Yes, although I don't particularly like it, I still think its reasonable. But it also depends on the function. If your function is to represent a company, then you're not there to show your own personal specialities or even offend the "customer". Of course what offensive or special will depend a lot on the average customer judges that. For example for a man to be reperesentative for an insurance company, an ear ring would have been impossible 20 years, but I think nowadays it would be more or less acceptable. I think (artistic) tattoos will go the same way with 10 years or so. I hope it will... |

My name is George and I was raised and live in the Netherlands. I have aPhD and leader of a small scientific group. Perhaps somewhat surprising to my collegues, I have heaviy tattooed hands, lower arms and thighs, which i keep covere for work, especially because the subject is rather, hmmm, unconventional. I feel very drawn to tatoos, I find the view and flexing of them highly attractive... |
