I had the same problem with getting the right depth with my first couple tattoos. My master told me that because everyone's skin is different, and different areas are tougher then others, there is no "golden rule." What worked for me was having my needles set at about 1mm and try a small line. Then make adjustments as you need. This has been working for me, give it a shot dude.

If you want a great power supply you need to get an Eikon. You can control every aspect of how your machine is running. Google it and have a look.

personally i use various grays but i dont use white w it unless its a color pic...I will use the witch hazel combo, Ive used the dip the needle in distilled water tech. but that takes getting used to for consistency, and kuro sumi gray wash which i like bc you can make it darker w a couple passes...for blk n gr work I like long tapered mags and have tried bugpins b4 i put my machines back in their boxes. To me these are awesome needles for blk n gry- i also use rds w large mags (9-15s have 23s but havent used them not in a shop anymore) My depth I dont have my needle hanging out but when the machine is running the needle is apprx 1.5mm and I do not bury it dont know if its right but thats what I did.

honestly Ive thought about that question a couple of times lately and if its one thing that ive learned is thats theres four ways to get a solid foot in the business 1)do it urself cuz practice makes perfect 2) ask ask ask! some of the older heads hate it but someone will teach you something 3) pay the money cuz some ppl are just about making a quick buck 4) you lucked out. someone believes in what you can do and the sky's the limit from there

hope that helps some...

me myself personally , use what ever the picture calls for , a lot of points , flat , curves round , size up on number of needles as needed but my fav's 9 round or double stacked 9 m2b works great for brushin in shadows where you need them . As well you want to adjust your machine to make the ink flow out the machine , do not set the grey wash like the lines . Just let it flow !

so you get tattooed right?....every time you get tattooed you ask a few questions( make them good ),remember just a few at a time,if you ask to many at once the artist will blow you off or mislead you, trust me ...each time you go spend a couple hundred, make some conversion and then when he or she is working on you ask a few more questions and before you know it you've got all the answers and some great work all for the same as if not less than the price of an apprenticeship.find an artist you feel comfortable around in big city's you may have 15 ,20 shops to chose from so take your time and look around, you never know what might happen..

sorry, one more thing. Joshua Carlton has come out with an absolutely spectacular book on tattooing. He goes over tons of techniques, tools, etc. Think this would be of great benefit to you. You can order it from his website, just look it up. Cost around $100, but totally worth every penny and more.

Best Wishes, JD

Hi, my name is Jeff D. I am a tattooist here in Albuquerque, NM . I am not an apprentice, my apprenticeship ended in '94. I am a pro who works at a great shop here called Rival Tattoos. Let me see how I can help you here.
It can always be a difficulty to pay for an apprenticeship. I was very fortunate and got mine for nothing
If I were you, try to negotiate a payment plan with your mentor, so that way you can hold a job as well as paying for it. Thats what I would try to do. I'm not sure who you are trying to apprentice under, but make sure they are a good solid reputable tattooist, not just someone trying to get your money. Do not go to one of those "tattoo schools" , as they are a joke and a waste of your money. If you need, you can contact me at inkjockey@excite.com for some basic technical tips that I can give you via email. . Hope things go well for you! above all, no matter what anyone says, don't give up! It's gonna be a difficult road ahead, but as long as you have the drive and dedication to do it, nothing can stop you, except yourself.
Talk with you soon, JD

there could be a number of reasons your lines aren't going in. you have to keep the skin pulled really tight or the needles will bounce off more than puncture. that would be the most common. another could be that you tube tips aren't flowly properly. they can get clogged really quick (especially if you use paper towels that have powder on them). that gets mixed with the vaseline & ink & it all fills the spaces in the needles & prevents capillary action. those are just a few things you could look at. or not.

Ok I need some advice on what I can do?

So my apprenticeship costs $3500, and I've been going into the shop for the last few weeks, but I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to pay for it. I thought I'd be able to get the money from my parents, but that was a bust. They have none to give.
So now I've been trying to get personal loans, but have already been turned down 3 times this week .
I've been a stay at home mom for the last 2 years so I have no proof of income and my b/f that I live with makes just enough for us to get by, so no one will give me a loan. And this sucks, I really want to do this and I don't want to give it up.
What should I do?
Is it possible to even get a loan from anyone with my current situation? If so, how?

a thin layer of A&D ointmant or vasoline will keep the ink from sticking to the skin. When your ready to wipe, get the ink solvent with green soap and let the paper towel soak it up, don't wipe so much as blot at it gently. Wiping hurts more than tattooing if you do it wrong.

thorn

needle depth is critical.
If you go too deep when lining you will hit the fat layer and the ink will spread out under the skin making the image ill-defined.

If your too light on the skin it will look like dots instead of a solid line.

I have alot of experience with hand held rotary engraving tools and tattooing reminds me of working with them, especially when doing hand held work which requires one hand to hold the peice and one to work the tool across the surface, engraving lines as you pull based on pressure and angle and sweep of your hand.

Tattooing is really no different. you are engraving flesh and looking to make a pretty scar. If you get the needle in the skin to the right depth, and make your line with consistant pressure, you will have a thin linear cut as clean as a scapels,

could be the machines are a factor. The first set I bought were over priced "POS" I bought from superior tattoo in Az. They get hot in about five minutes of use and require constant adjustment when using them.

I've had similar problems with lining, and I'd say the biggest factor to getting the ink in the first time is going slow enough for the machine to do it's work and keeping enough ink in the tip to make the line solid.

Needle size may also be a factor, depending on how bold of a line your going for...

The pressure you apply with your hands to the surface of the skin while bridging and positioning your hands should be used to make the skin tight as you like, but it's not easy to do with vasoline or a&D all over the work surface...

When you have to reline a light line, it helps if you can see the needle as you go. I prefer to lay the machine almost flat to the skin and keep the needle at the surface of the skin fully visable to me making the line toward my line of sight. I find it increadibly easy to say in the line this way.

Hope this helps

yeah..I am actually catching some shit about this on another group- apparently, one the fact that I am paying for an apprenticeship, and two, the fact that I don't believe in humiliating (Note I said humiliating and not 'ball bustin') is an absolutely positive indicator that I will, in fact, be nothing more than a scratcher who wants to learn to tattoo in a short period of time. Apparently, the fact that I said I wanted to be able to take my time, learn the proper and safe way to do things, and grow in what I do meant NOTHING to this woman, and she feels that we all have to learn to scrub out a toilet with a toothbrush before we can learn to you know, set up stations, build needles, sterilize, etc, etc.
Sorry. I had to get that out, I'm pretty irate.

If you want to check the shade of grey you're using, try it in an area that will need to be darker or black when you're done. That way if it's too dark, it will not show in the finished product. You can go darker, if it's too light, but if you go too dark you're screwed.
