Hey all,
Just joined the goup and thought I would say hi.
I've owned a '70 Beetle for about 5 yrs now, slowly doing some work on it here and there. We've redone the headliner, replaced all the window seals, rebuilt/reupholstered the seats, and done general maintenance/tune-up work so far. I recently replaced that damn 009 distributor with a real Bosch vac advance unit like it's supposed to have....what an improvement!
All work will be on hold for some time though, as my wife will be having our baby boy soon, and I have become obsessed with getting another tattoo maybe in the next year whenever we can afford it.

Seeing as it's all part of the VAG - I don't see why not, right?!?

hello all,
My name is Tiny. Here's a picture of my new baby, needs alot of work i know... i have a question i hope someone can answer for me. the engine is a 1600 put out in august of 1970... my tranny is leaking, badly but no matter what i do it keeps leaking, i've replaced all the seals and such, etc... so since i know nothing about rebuilding trannys i'm just gonna get a replacement. considering the engine was produced in aug of 1970 i'm assuming the bug was an early 70s model... i know the axels have boots on both ends and i'm told that means it's an IRS tranny??? so what i need to know is when i go to order a transmission what do i ask for? any help would be very much appreciated.

peace to all,

Tiny

I manly prefer the anything air cooled prior to 70. Anything else just gets more complicated , and away from the simplistic engering of the beetles. Can't say I haven't owned a water cooled, 89 jetta just wasn't me...

I love the fact that I a 6'4" 320 mother fucker fits more comfortable than my 61 Falcon.. Also the fact that I can piss off the alot of the asian imports. With out spending alot of money into them....

i recently learned to love the beetle.but it was not a typical way.it was in the woods of the ocala national forest. goin through trials in third gear in my buddies rail. since then i have built my own rail buggie out of a 67 bug. i know alot of people dont like cutting one up but i think of it as extending the life of what was to be a junk yard addition.

I agree! Everyone should have to learn how to drive/work on/ fix-on-the-run an air-cooled VW. I learned soooo much as a first-time driver by driving my beetle. I think everyone should learn how to drive a standard too. It's impractical not too! Driving a car with no AC, no heat, no 'heated seats', no cruise control, no power steering, no stereo(to speak of anyway), no ABS, etc. really gives you an appreciation of these things. I learned how to dodge traffic when my brakes decided to go out one day while going down a hill with cars stopped at the bottom. Now that's a lesson for ya.

Oh yeah...and add electrical tape to your list. It comes in handy too!

I believe I have the biggest love for VWs. I've owned more than 20 in my life and I currntly have 4. Everyones first ride should be an aircooled beetle. This would insure that the young driver would learn respect for an automobile as well as how to keep it running. Spark plugs, oil changes, and learning how to improvise in a break down are essential in VW ownership. There is nothing on an aircooled VW that I can't fix with a screwdriver, cressent wrench and some duct tape and zip ties. Man I love these cars. I could go on for days.

LUCKY!!!! So envious! I want a Jetta or a Touareg (I always end up needing cargo space to the max) but I'll have to wait til I get a steady (re: grown-up) job before that happens! Hopefully I can find a nice used one by then.
Yeah...my brother got a speeding ticket in my SuperBeetle...going 95 in a 55. hehehe. The speedometer didn't always work (or the gas gauge...that was fun to discover). The cop said he'd never given a speeding ticket to a beetle. My brother corrected him and said, "Well, this is a SuperBeetle..." LOL

Volkswagens kick ass! My first car was a Scirroco. That thing looked hot, but it drove hotter. I used to scare the shit out of my passengers when I took corners. It was so low to the ground and compact that I would take corners without slowing down. So much fucking fun! Then I had an old Jetta. That by far is my favorite car to date. I loved it, but I was forced to sell it due to my job. Very sad. I'm from a family of VW lovers. My sister has had 4, my brother has had about a dozen, no exaggeration. Here we are with our Jettas.
