i agree with the dude that said hardcore is a lifestyle, punk is a d.i.y culture that was built to be independant, i allso think punk has to be evolving, the sound has to change as the struggle has to change with the times and the problems that the kids face today, i like the whole math, spazz, grind sub genre which no ones really mentioned yet, and i really like the very early metal core bands like one king down, snapcase and converge, but the whole cock rock power metal "hardcore" bands can fuck off, they can fuck right off! hardcore is not and has never been about looking cool, getting chicks and selling records, its that kind of attitude that promotes sexism and homophobia! it's these bands that are selling us out, there traitors, they sell of our music and culture to the fucking vultures with the highest bidder so they can put pretty packaging on it and sell it to mall kids with nike shoes and big macs! they are not punk rock, they are not hardcore, they are mediocor pop rock!

Before the internet was huge, when people actually came to shows even if the band wasnt super popular. You watched every band and it didnt matter if you were a skin head, punk rocker, metal kd etc.. When people went on word of mouth and you had to flyer your ass off. I remeber singing for my band and sending demos out and talking on the phone with promoters.. I still have my old zine interviews too lol.

Around 1988 is when things really started to change in the scene. What happened is that people started making rules- you cant like that band unless you're vegetarian, you cant like this band unless you're straight edge, you can't like those guys unless you're a krishna. A scene that wasn't meant to have any rules was ruined when people started making rules. Once the rules came in they were followed by the Jock Mentality, and the scene got dumber. Sorry, rambled on from idea to idea there, but you can figure it out. |

Being old enough to have seen the scene grow into what it is today (I actually stopped going to shows around 92 because of what the scene became), I can say that things have changed drastically. One of the reasons there is (as you say) not much REAL hardcore anymore is because it's cool to be punk now. And with acceptance comes media exploitation. Punk bands actually stand a chance of making money now, so a lot of them play or turn to playing music that is more sellable. Somewhere along the way Hardcore became dumb metal. Just cause you don't have long hair doesn't mean it's not fucking metal! Too many solos, too much growling, and the songs are too damn long. Sure there are some good bands that come out that still play hardcore, but they're becoming harder and harder to find (check out the Alligators- Roger Miret with the Guys from Insted- sounds like early AF).

what the fuck is "real hardcore" anyway? older school will swear that the only real hardcore is black flag, circle jerks, minor threat , cro-mags(age of quarrel), etc......then there was a huge metal influence and you ended up with early agnostic front, leeway, killing time (plus the whole crossover with bands like DRI, crumbsuckers, suicidal, later cro mags)........then in the early nineties everything progressed to more post-hardcore bands (though they were still considered hardcore) like quicksand, burn, supertouch, iceburn, and all the other revelation records bands....my point is that hardcore has evolved (as it should) and alot of bands that are considered hardcore bear no resemblance to one another musically, or, in some cases, in any way whatsoever.... |
