Tore my knee the night before the LIPride BJJ tournament...April 4th...horizontal tear of the medial meniscus and grade2 tear of MCL. Woke up the day of tournament and duct-taped knee...won silver medal but massive pain/immobility. Had surgery one month later and was told by doctor and PT that I'd be out of training for at least 3 months. I saw this as an opportunity...time for the big tattoo. The Octopus = 8 weapons of muay thai, grappling, love of ocean.
Tattoo is now done and I've returned to my training...all worked out fine, I just hope I don't have another "big tattoo" excuse for a long time....
Be good, TomK |

Anyway, when I was a child I studied Kempo (that doesn't count.. I was too young).
After high school, I studied Wing Chun for a while but did not complete the forms/system. I did, however, take with me the sensitivity/speed ideals and the centerline theory.
In 2005, I spent one year training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (with gi) under Carlos Valente (Rolles/Rickson Gracie). I recieved my blue after a handful of months...
I left to train no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Dean Lister and an MMA school just before his UFC debut. That lasted about a year.
For the last few years I've picked up Muay Thai but due to bjj injuries through the years, have not been able to commit to a pankration or cage fight.... the chiropractor said my head isn't on straight... literally. Haha.
So now I'm starting at an Eskrima/Kali school. For the uninformed, these Filipino martial arts seem to be based mainly on knife fighting, stick fighting, and arm-trapping. Think what you see as the hand to hand combat in the Bourne Identity series (though that seemed mixed Kali with Krav Maga [a brutally awesome Israeli martial art])I'm meeting with a few teachers this week to see the differences between their styles of FMA. I'd also like to check out a Pekiti Tirsia class if I can find one. |

Sinbad, I think it's funny that you rant about "styles are crap", but then proceed to list all the "styles" you trained in. Knock off the movie lines (or if you DO recite movie lines and just play nice. What you should have said is that training in just ONE style leaves too many holes in a person's fight game. Just my two cents man.

Just joined the site and found this group...I'm a pro MMA fighter and have been fighting for the last 2 years...I recently took a sabbatical from my job as a pharmacist in AZ and moved to Indiana to train MMA full-time...I've primarily focused my training on being as balanced b/n stand-up and ground as possible, but Greco seems to be my anchor, for now...I'll be fighting in the KY and Southern IN area this summer if anyone's interested in seeing that go down!!...

Actually, what we do is something called Batto Do. If I understand correctly, it is what Iaido is derived from. It's pretty basic stuff...no fencing. Mainly many different types of draws and cuts with no katas. Once we understand this style, the class will turn into an Iaido class. I can't wait, the Iaido Katas look so awesome! |

anybody else ever tried any? didn't feel like I got too much with the chi kung that I've done, but it one of those things that builds over time. Tai chi, however, I noticed a remarkable difference in my balance. Not that my balance was bad before, but after, it was solid. |

I started out at age 7 with Judo and within three months I placed second in a regional tournament. Was competitor until age 16, when I switched to WTF (now olympic) style Taekwon Do, which I also did as a successful competitor and later coach and instructor. Parallel, I studied Hung Gar Kung Fu in Vancouver with master Stephen Chang, and Shotokan Karate in Germany (where I am from). My passion of the years is budo taijutsu, wich I studied in Germany since the eighties under Moshe Kastiel and Doron Navon. I haven't been able to practice for a while and looking forward to get back into active training, which I hope is going to happen soon. |

What style of martial arts do you guys study? what kind of training do you do? It would be cool to get this group to be a little more active so I'm trying to get something going.
I began studying Kenpo and got my black belt when I was 17.After that I started training Muay Thai, San Da and BJJ and have been competing in Muay Thai and MMA for the last 5 years. I've got a pretty intense training schedule but before I get into that I'd like to hear from some others as well..... |
