Tattoo Artists and Shamanic Theory
Tattooing and it's sibling forms of body modifictaion can be seen as a modern form of Shamanism.
We have feet in both worlds, the sacred and profane, pleasure and pain, the ugly and the beautiful, the ancient and the new.
We provide rites of passage and healing through transformation, pain and symbolism.
Let's discuss it in practice and in theory, sharing experiences, questions and beliefs.
What Chakra have you affected?
Let's go.
What Meridian of Acupunture did you hit?

June 20, 2008, I added the kanji/word "family" in a deep purple ink. A few of the lines gave me a reminder that familycan be a bit of a pain (lol)

Orchid
This tattoo is on thinner curve of my left breast, over my heart. The orchid represents family. Family is our base, our heart, our safety net, our sanctuary. My family is my strength. We love together, we fight together, we cry together, we laugh together. We may even do these things at the expense of one another, but we all know that when we are in need, we can count on each other.
Family is our root. Family is our support system. Family is our instruction manual. Family is sacred.
The orchid represents green nation(the plants) always growing, dependent upon Mother Earth, rooted, drawing nourishment, weaving a web that holds things together, giving of themselves to benefit others. The grasses that nourish our bodies are nourished themselves by the earth and the waters. We are All Related ~Mitakwe Oaysin

This symbol is Celtic design known as a Shield of Protection, based on the numbers 3 &4 which enable energies to come into play that help form circles of protection and overall well being. The central form in the design is the Quatrefoil, four circles interlocked in Celtic knots, representing the four cardinal direction, the four elements, and the four winds. These points also represent the four angelic gaurdians. In addition, the Quatrefoil also represents the clover, also bestowing luck. This symbol is also diagramaticlly shows all of these elements coming together to create the Earth.
The significance of it being on my foot is the link that your feet have to your root chakra, the chakra that grounds you and joins you to the Earth, and to every one on it. My path has always been one of Spirit, protection, and the joining of oppisets. To me it is a constant reminder that all is one.

Tibetan skull tattoos or tattoos of Native Indian decorated buffalo skulls suggest something intrinsicly spiritual, but darker, more ominous skulls and zombies represent dead things.

Do you have dead things on your body?

The shoulder or bicep / tricep tattoos in many primative cultures, let people know what rank you were in the tribe. Who, or what you belonged to. What you were in service to.
It also represented your accomplishments, on the shoulder for all to see. (Think of military patches.)

But also consider the duel meaning. What is your burden? What do you carryon your shoulders?

Have an ankle or a foot tattoo? Planning one?
Think about this; what are you standing in, in life? What do you walk in?

As an example, I have a Samoan tattoo, representing the lava rock fern of the islands. I will always be standing or walking in it now.

Waht do you walk in? Flowers? Clouds? Fire? Bones?

What's "Got Your Back?" Apart from the nape of the neck and the small of the back (the lower lumbar), the back yeilds the images of what protects you.
Is it a totem animal, or fairy or angel?

It almost seems that a large number of back tattoos have images of living things which bear eyes, watching the back of the person.

Here we can take the placement literally. What is tattooed here is close to the heart. It could be what you wish to fill your heart with, or a memorial. One may also place an image of protection here.

The Heart Chakra (typically yellow by representation) may also be considered here.
