Well my name is Kenny and I'm an artist from California. I currently live in Tulsa Oklahoma and I'm livin life and havin fun. I am a father and a brother and allot of other things too. Since I was a mini-Ken I've been into art and creation expressions in music. I am self tought as far as drawing goes. Although I did take one art class in high school in my junior year. I use your basic mediums like pen with ink, airbrushed paints, markers, colored pencil, chalk and pastels, and graphite when I get bored. I am here to learn techniques and grow as an artist. Expand my visions and see where they take me. My hands hurt right now cause I play too much guitar and video games and I just cant stop either one of those things cause my wife is a guitar and I love manga art so video games just enhance my love for it.

I would have to say first that pretty much anything you illustrate has been created before you. Either in the imagintion of another person who cannot bring it to life, or by another artist who is probably still hiding in the closet somewhere in a foriegn country or even right next door. The use of tools is how humns get things done. One of those tools is the minds eye, one is the hand, one is the medium, one is the canvas, the applicator, the idea....you get the point. Of course we all cant reach a brick wall from 20 feet away, so the projector is the tool used to assist when I airbrush murals. And then another point, survival of the fitest, means that unless you want to fail, you will use whatever means necessary to achieve a goal. Of course, there is the code of ethics. For example you wouldn't steal a car to get to work but if the car were made available for you to use as transportation, there you have an opportunity to make a choice that is a good one. In other words, don't take something from someones possesion and call it your own. I think the term cheating in this discussion is better replaced with the fragment 'makin it happen'.... as far as reference material... I would assume the greats would be honored to see that happen as long as we don't try to steal their glory by recreating an artwork without giving 'props' to the creator of the original idea which we have learned something from.

Taking your airbrush apart and rebuilding it is a no no, unless you know what you are doing. It messes up the seals and causes it to sputter. If you bend a needle, toss it. And don't mix up your nozzles with the wrong size needles.

the whole thing with the show here is VERY surprising. This is definately a blue collar town, pickup trucks and deer hunting. There are 2 large universities near .. and a good sized college in town ... a fairly active local music scene as well.

BTW I can't recommend southern cali. bang for the buck it's not a great place.

one of the things i like doing when using colored pencil is to use a very thin water color first for the shadows .. like purples greens browns or blues depending .. let it dry really well .. then use the pencils.

we had an art show put on by the guy that lives on the top floor of our building. he does a show every 3 months. he was low on space so i let him show 9 of the paintings here in the shop. the last night of the show they had about 10 little idie short films that we showed here in the shop. It was pretty nice. 4 other businesses in the downtown area offered up wall space also, so it was kind of an Art Walk. The organizer ( Nathan ) and I have been trying to organize a full time art show with some of the downtown businesses to show artists work full time. We plan on cycling the art every 2 months or so. Most the artists were from within 60 miles but a few came from Portland .. about an 8 hour drive or so i guess. I wasn't showing my own work in this show .. but i did end up selling 2 pieces that I had in the shop

the drawing is okay, but i'm a pretty big hard ass on people and their ability to draw. one thing that i learned when drawing children and women is that it is a good idea to not put as much emphasis on the shading of the bridge of the nose, and on lines around the mouth. these things make someone look older. also maybe try to sketch more. if the shapes are roughed in and slowly built up it is easier to make changes in the drawing. hope this wasn't too mean of a critique.

as far as needle thing, when you switch needles did you also switch the little tips ? with diffrent needle sizes you have to make sure you use the tip an cap that goes with it, if yours came with Fine, Medium, an Large selection youll just have to compare sizes to match them up right, like the largest tip must go with large needle etc. sputtering also may mean your paint is too thick, did you buy the airbrush brand? an when your airbrushing you periodically check the tip for dried paint that can gather there. ive also bent my fine tip needle an have to get a new one. an if your needle bent check an make sure the tip looks ok. if this all sounds weird maybe you have a complete diffrent setup an if you tell me what brand an style i can have a look at it. as far as me using regular acrylics, i dont wanna say if its right because your airgun might be diffrent, but mine can handle paint you can use for model cars so i figure acrylic is less harsh then that, but like i said it depends on your airgun

theres diffrent brands that have "special" things about them too just like tattoo inks. an you just have to know whats good, things can alter how you mix paints an which brands including weather, humitidy, tempurture, an what exactly your painting cause diffrent jobs can have diffrent mixtures. an then theres speciaty paints for example theres a popular paint thats black an turns colors when its hot or you touch it like a mood ring. so im going from using watered down acrylics to having to know all this crap, just to think about airbrushing on a motorcycle tank. but i guess im lucky the guys showing me this stuff for no charge, i can make updates if your interested. today was just my first day. an cant remember half the stuff i was told

i was just about to start an airbrush topic, LOL. currently ive only been using acrylic paints an watering them down for my airbrush (duel action badger cresendo) cause it seemed to me that was the same thing those more expensive airbrush paints were but i may be wrong, but so far it stays for an extremely long time on clothing without washing out. an also good for cavas or thick paper cause its acrylic after all. today was my first apprenticship at a custom motorcycle an auto paint shop where im apprenticing to be an airbrush artist. today i prepped out a fat boy tank. holy crap. you damn near have to be a chemist to know how to paint on metal. i learned about reducers, hardeners, etching primers, epoxys. an that all can go in just one paint mix for one coat, which theres like 7 or so coats!!. an thats not getting into the stripping an sanding i had to do. i thought i could just go in there an airbrush on a tank, boy was i wrong. i know how to handle a gun, but not all this chemistry stuff, cont...

You have no quality-control or production limits over something like this.

i generally just use pencils to sketch out a painting.
first i use soft charcoal to get the gist of it down, and then i go in with a mechanical pencil to lay down the main lines and stuff.

soft charcoal is SO helpful.
i dont see why more people dont use it.

i work with woodless pencils for portraits and such ( if not using compressed charcoal ) and lead holders the rest of the time. the only thing i use mechanical pencils or wood pencils for is sketching. I used to work very tight when doing pencil, smoothing everything and not showing any "tool work" .. now i've loosened up quite a bit and have fun with showing tool work.

thought id start a topic on just pencils.. lets see, one thing ive found, the darkest shade is 9B. most often youll find 8B, 9B seems a little harder to find. but one important thing ive found about 9b, is its very very soft. an the woodless faber castell 9b is the darkest youll ever get. its much much darker then the wood derwent brand 9b. i find this might be because the lead is so soft, that when they make it in wooded form (much skinnier lead) they have to harden it some just so it wont break off when you try to use it. but in the woodless form they can allow it to be a bit softer because the lead is larger. its such a diffrence that i use my woodless faber to darken an area then fade it out with the derwent 9b. now i dunno if derwent has a woodless 9b they might, but i would be willing to bet fabers better anyway )

from what i can gather using my vast knowledge of art (not), most great artist ignited there love and understanding for what they believe is art by copying there mentors this allowing familiarity of methods that are manipulated to create there own vision . so is it cheatin ? dont know and if you get saticfacttion out of what you do and however you acheive it i say continue

personally i wont draw from a photo that is artistic in nature, i can just tell i guess lol, an other photos look like just a snapshot without much thought but rather just good timing. an i dont really think thats art. on anouther note. ive seen people paint portraits:they would take a picture of thier subject, print it on canvas, then go over it in most areas in oil paint. is that stil considered a custom portrait? i dont really know. i know if i paid big bucks an knew they did that , they had better come down in price by half

twyliteskyz
topic: cheating?
posted: Fri Nov 23, 2007 18:34

yea, it gets complicated ) . it starts falling back to the point to what is considered art?an that varries from person to person, some photos i wouldnt consider art an the next person might. also you can only re-create the wheel so many times, an it may seem like someone is coppieing someone elses style but in fact the person never seen that other persons art an maybe even though they had created some new style lol. but in most cases you can look at someones art an who they are "supposibly" copieing an be able to give reasonable judgment to whether it is or not. ive seen many tattoos on hot ink that were supposibly custom but in my opinion they were just changed very slightly from an original artwork. an they didnt give the original any credit. an when compared side by side it was obvious to anyone that looked at it.

topic: cheating?

it's not the use of a particular tool to create a piece that defines cheating. Using a projector to get the line work for a pencil portrait, or using a grid etc isn't cheating. The motive behind the piece tho .. copying a drawing / painting and calling it original art is cheating. Artists and photographers have been going back and forth for ages about artists "stealing" a photographers work if they reproduce a photo in a painting. Most photos aren't "art", tho of course there is artistic photography. Also copying someone's "style" isn't cheating. I think cheating would be copying style, color schemes, technique, subject matter, etc then making claims of originality.

its kind of a touchy topic.

reference pictures, grids, projectors, even digital layouts....

what are your thoughts on this?
is using available resources to enhance your artwork make it any less of a work of art?

it is kind of hard to tell that's him.

it's the lighting.
it slims his face and trims his nose.
one noticeable thing about johnny cash is that strange, side-by-side double nose thing he's got going on. it's like he has two nose tips or something.

while black is great in tattoos, it is something to be avoided in painting and digital work. if you take a dark blue (like a cadmium) and mix it with burnt umber you will get a solid black, which you can control the blue/brown ratio of. of course you can add other colours to slightly alter it. one of the things my oil painting tutor had me do was paint solid color still lives. like, take all red objects and set them together and while looking at it and painting it you will learn how many different shades of red there are. shade influenced by adding yellow, blue, white etc. anyhow...

i've used oils quite a bit in the past. i hold two art degrees, a BFA and a MFA (not that that neccesarily means anything). while doing my masters course i stopped using oil and now paint with houshold high gloss paint. it looks good trust me. never really used acrylics. i think it's the art snob in me. mostly draw with pencils, ink, and colored pencil, though i'll play around with watercolors sometimes. and i've done printmaking of all sorts, in fact my last paintings are really more prints than paintings because of the way they are made. anyhow, i'm attaching an image, tell me what you think.

there is an important rule of thumb to remember when your adding medium to your paints called fat over lean. You want to start with thinner mediums such as oderless mineral spirits and layer thicker mediums over the top, such liquin. If you reverse this order you can have all kinds of problems immediately and with the archivalness (word?)of your painting. If you need any specifics let me know and I'll look them up for you.
