So why is it so unbelieveable that a redheaded person can have a redheaded child? I hate when people stop me and my little leprechaun looking daughter out and ask me if I dye her hair. She's almost 3, why would I do that so young? I dont know. I was wondering if anyone else had any problems like this. |

Pain threshold
In people with red hair, the cells that produce skin and hair pigment have a dysfunctional melanocortin 1 receptor. Liem says this dysfunction triggers the release of more of the hormone that stimulates these cells, but this hormone also stimulates a brain receptor related to pain sensitivity.
Liem is hopeful that the research will lead to improved patient care. Anaesthetists must be very careful when choosing how much anesthetic to give a patient before an operation. Too little and the patient could wake up, too much and they could suffer cardiac complications.
The research will also move forward understanding of the relationship between genetic characteristics and anaesthetic requirements, he says: "Investigating the role of melanocortin system in the central nervous system is likely to help us understand fundamental questions such as which systems in the brain produce unconsciousness and which modulate pain perception."

People with red hair are more sensitive to pain and consequently need more anaesthetic during operations than other patients, according to new research.
"Red hair is the first visible human trait, or phenotype, that is linked to anaesthetic requirement," says anaesthesiologist Edwin Liem, who conducted the research at the Outcomes Research Institute of the University of Louisville, US.
Ten red-haired women between 19 and 40 years of age and ten more with dark hair were given a commonly-used inhaled anaesthetic in the study. After each dose of the anaesthetic, the women were given a standard electric shock.
The process was repeated until the women said they felt no pain. Their reflexes were also monitored to assess the effectiveness of the painkiller. The researchers found that red heads required 20 per cent more aesthetic to dull the pain.

Redheads have better staying power than blondes in the bedroom, a report claims.
Redheads lovemaking lasted 25 minutes compared to blondes who stop after just 14 German scientists say. The report also found that Redheads wanted the most sex every day - compared to every other day compared to dark haired and brunettes.
Dr Weilburg also stated that many women dye their hair red to "feel more attractive". |

Blondes may have more fun but redheads have more sex, according to new research in Germany.
The study by Hamburg Sex Researcher Professor Dr Werner Habermehl looked at the sex lives of hundreds of German women and compared them with their hair colour.
He said: "The sex lives of women with red hair were clearly more active than those with other hair colour, with more partners and having sex more often than the average. The research shows that the fiery redhead certainly lives up to her reputation."
He added that women who dyed their hair red from another colour were signalling they were looking for a partner, and added: "Even women in a fixed relationship are letting their partners know they are unhappy if they dye their hair red. They are saying that they are looking for something better."
Psychologist Christine Baumanns said however that it may not be the women who were to blame for the better sex lives of redheads.
She said: "Red stands for passion and when a man sees a redhead he will think he is dealing with a woman who won't mess around, and gets straight to the point when it comes to sex." |
