ongoing tattoo saga |
I've just had another three hours of lying on my back staring at the ceiling tiles trying and failing to think of something pleasant to take my mind off things. It's a couple of days after my third tattoo session with the talented Ms Jo Harrison (modernbodyart.co.uk). I forgot to take a camera along so no pics yet, besides I presume nobody wants to see pictures of me squirming like a baby. I'll have to wait until it heals to take some pictures but it doesn't look that different from before, except some more bits have been coloured in.
The colours are incredibly intense compared to my other tattoos, even when they were fresh. I think she has her own very particular way of getting colour into the skin and she's very meticulous about it. It takes a lot of time and it bloody hurts. About an hour into the session I said "I'm not having any more tattoos, this is my last". I didn't think about it, the words just came out of my mouth. Half a dozen people in the room, two people watching me being tattooed and nobody said a word. They all ignored me, presumably because it was A. Sacrilege or B. They knew I didn't mean it – like a woman in labour, saying she'd never have a baby again – so they very politely ignored me.
A couple of my friends here have recommended Amitop anaesthetic gel as a way of dealing with the needle. I'd heard that there were side effects so I didn't use it last time, but this time around, with further encouragement I went and bought myself all they had in Boots (drug store). You have to apply it about an hour before you get tattooed and then wrap yourself in cling film (shrink wrap). It comes in the tinniest of tubes and they only had four of them, which wasn't enough, so I concentrated on what had been the most sensitive places, my stomach and ribs.
All in all it worked very well, I just didn't have enough of it, so the parts that weren't numbed seemed to hurt even more. There's an easy solution to that though - use more of the stuff. I didn't get any side effects, though this tattoo has been particularly irritable and itchy, both the parts where I used the gel and those where I didn't. I think it was the amount of ink that went into me. My ribs were quite swollen for about two or three days. Great stuff though. Can't wait until it's finished and I can move on to the next project.
