apprenticeships, how to get one..
Now apprenticeships. Do not talk to me about an apprenticeship. Especially if you do not have a tattoo and you are not an artist. If you cannot draw, and you have not gotten tattooed, then do not talk to me, you are not serious and you only want to do it because you have been watching too much tv and think it is cool. Everybody wants to be a tattoo artist nowadays. Now if you want to get an apprenticeship. Listen closely. I will tell you the secret of doing it so you cannot call me an asshole. Go to shops. Look around. Checkout portfolios. When you find the artist who you really like their stuff and you want to tattoo as good as them, that is the person you talk to. (While you are looking for this person, then you draw, draw, draw, and paint, paint, paint and get together a portfolio of your talent) When you find the person talk to them about apprenticing. Then save your money and get tattoed by them. Continue to do it, every time bring your portfolio with new stuff. Everybody you know who wants a tattoo, INSIST they go to theis person and make sure you are there. Stop in and offer to help out. Get lunch for them. whatever. I gaurantee they will eventually think of you as someone worth training and loyal. Anyone worth learning from going to tell you no. Keep in mind others stop in EVERY DAY asking about it. You may need to pay some money, if so, don't quibble or complain, just save up. You may have to move, you may have to change jobs to spend enough time at the shop. Whatever it is, just fucking do it. Don't make excuses. If you really want it, do what you have to, if you aren't willing thendon't talk to me.
That is all, and it may make me sound like an asshole, then so be it. I care about you and I am trying to look out for you.
Always yours, Nearly Painless James

Kat Von D, scratchers, hack shops
Alright, I know you all want to know my thoughts so here it goes. I watch LA Ink. I watch it because Hannah Atchison is a badass, Kim Saigh is a badass (truly, really she is), and Corey Miller is a badass. Now let's talk about the rest of it. Pixie annoys me. She really does, I am not telling you she is a bad person, but on the show she crawls my nerves. Kat just plain pisses me off. I hear every day from people who don't know any better how great she is. Let me tell you, she is truly decent at best. She's an alright tattoo artist talent wise. There are a ton of folks who kick her ass at the stuff she specializes in. She is a complete waste of breath when it comes to her cross contamination control. Let me tell you something. You should NEVER get tattooed in a shop where people smoke. You should NEVER get tattooed in a shop where there is an animal that is not in an aquarium. (Even hairless cats shed and they still spray piss everywhere like any other cat) You should not be able to smoke and take shots while getting a tattoo. If you ever see your artist touch their hair or face with their gloves on then stop them and leave. If you ever see them pick up a mirror with dirty gloves or touch your new tattoo with bare hands or tattoo barefoot, then you need to run. If they do not bag their bottles then you need to go. All these are cross contamination. Kat has done all of these. Cross contamination is the spreading of disease by touching things with dirty glove that you will continue to touch and handle afterwards (not disposables) thus if you touch the thing after tattooing on someone with AIDS and then touch it again you are spreading the AIDS. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY!
Now, you should NEVER let yourself get tattoed at a "tattoo party" or by someone who is "professional but doesn't work at a shop". Bullshit. They are not a professional. Professionals work in shops. PERIOD. A true professional if they are between shops will not tattoo on you until they get in another shop. Your brothers friend, your buddy, your dealer, you, none of them know how to tattoo. Don't let somebody "run one on ya" with a homemade "gun" or fall for that bullshit "he had a real machine" line. Don't let people try to learn on you. They suck and you will walk around with it forever. They cannot teach themselves something they do not know. They can't "figure it out" and they will be spreading disease. To you and your loved ones.
Be careful when you walk into a shop. You CANNOT trust every shop to be professional. Lately there have been a run of hack ass scratchers opening "shops" . Don't be fooled. They still suck. They will still jack you up. They shouldn't do any of the things listed above. They should have portfolios with consistant quality tattoos in them. They should have an autoclave. Period. That is non-negotiable. They should not do underage tattoos. Period. It is against the law in all of Ga. Anybody that will break that law will not care about your safety. They should not trade drugs or sex for tattoos. Period. Your artist should be able to show you quality tattooing and have a good reputation and demeanor. You should feel at ease with them, not on edge.
