apprenticeships, how to get one.. |
Now apprenticeships. Do not talk to me about an apprenticeship. Especially if you do not have a tattoo and you are not an artist. If you cannot draw, and you have not gotten tattooed, then do not talk to me, you are not serious and you only want to do it because you have been watching too much tv and think it is cool. Everybody wants to be a tattoo artist nowadays. Now if you want to get an apprenticeship. Listen closely. I will tell you the secret of doing it so you cannot call me an asshole. Go to shops. Look around. Checkout portfolios. When you find the artist who you really like their stuff and you want to tattoo as good as them, that is the person you talk to. (While you are looking for this person, then you draw, draw, draw, and paint, paint, paint and get together a portfolio of your talent) When you find the person talk to them about apprenticing. Then save your money and get tattoed by them. Continue to do it, every time bring your portfolio with new stuff. Everybody you know who wants a tattoo, INSIST they go to theis person and make sure you are there. Stop in and offer to help out. Get lunch for them. whatever. I gaurantee they will eventually think of you as someone worth training and loyal. Anyone worth learning from going to tell you no. Keep in mind others stop in EVERY DAY asking about it. You may need to pay some money, if so, don't quibble or complain, just save up. You may have to move, you may have to change jobs to spend enough time at the shop. Whatever it is, just fucking do it. Don't make excuses. If you really want it, do what you have to, if you aren't willing thendon't talk to me. That is all, and it may make me sound like an asshole, then so be it. I care about you and I am trying to look out for you. Always yours, Nearly Painless James

If you want to be a Doctor, lawyer, or whatever else do you get trained for free? No, it takes alot of hard work and school and on the job training and all the while you are the little man on the pole. Just because you are a good artist or anything else does not mean that someone owes you training with out somethingin return. But, most people want something for nothing, because they are lazy and do not want to do the hard work to get to the end. they want to jump right over that and start making it big and all of that. When you was born did you come out walking and talking? Would you want a doctor that was in school for a few weeks to do your operation? Some just see it very differently!

just my two cents, but if youre talking about wanting to learn, and not wanting to pony up money to get taught, then why are you tattooing on people and blatently showing off that you have never been trained, not you j... but the guy that has no experience, that is the textbook definition of a scratcher...

The only way an apprentice is an investment is if they are then going to work at the shop they apprenticed at. Too many wannabes do not prove their loyalty. Sounds to me like you have nothing to bitch about. You found a nice talented artist who is willing to teach you. Pony up the dough and do it.

i speak from the apprenticeship side of things. i have been trying for a while now and i can say that i havent been hounding anybody because thats not me. i agree you should pick a artist that you think is great and would like to learn from but my experience has been that they are assholes all except one but he wanted money that i do not have. i am not willing to kiss ass i been through to much .i feel like you either like my work and see potential and are willing to share some of ya knowledge or ya dont.i am a very loyal person by nature so if some one gave me a shot i would definately show respect and do what they asked and bring business to the shop thats the lease i could do.i am a talented artist because i can damn near do it all as far as styles go including portrait work, but being a artist you never really know it all there is always room to learn and thats one of the reasons i love it. what i dont understand is why do some shop owners want some thing before hand. to me an apprentice is an investment.

Could'nt agree with you more. One thing that people don't seem to get is that, even after your apprenticeship is done, that's only the first mountain to cross. I'm doing it full time now, and actually doing pretty well, but still far from where I want to be. I always tell people when they ask "What does it take?". It takes, above all else, patience! It's a never ending process.

Never said you HAD to be someone's bitch. But I am sure some places that is what it takes. But if you think in what I said to do that makes you someone's bitch, then you are not cut out for an apprenticeship. Humble does not equal being a bitch.

well put...in my apprenticeship, i worked 2 jobs and full time at the shop for free......when i did start getting paid it was not much....over time as my master felt more comfortable with my ability i got more esponsibilty and having to work my ass off for it(80 hour work weeks and no sleep ) i now have a love for the art and mad respect for my master and all artists that have established themselves as a force in this industry...you do not have to be on tv to be a bad ass artist...

good point: as with everything in life, if you want it that bad then you are ALREADY committed to it and you do whatever it takes - WHATEVER it takes. you work your ass off and you don't complain. if this is "your life" then make it just that: your life. i don't speak from the viewpoint of wanting an apprenticeship, but i do know how it feels to want something so bad that just the thought of not having it in your life makes your heart bleed. james isn't being an asshole, he's being honest. so if you can't take it, fuck off and stop wasting people's time.
