ATLANTA - A worrisome superbug seen in prisoners and athletes is also showing up in people who get illegal tattoos, federal health officials said Thursday.

Forty-four tattoo customers in Ohio, Kentucky and Vermont developed skin infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The infections occurred in 2004 and 2005, and were traced to 13 unlicensed tattoo artists, according to an article in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

These are the first documented cases if tattoo-related MRSA infections, said Dr. Mysheika LeMaile-Williams, a CDC infectious disease investigator who co-authored the report.

MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that fights off the body’s immune system and destroys tissues. The community-associated variety, seen in the tattoo infections, has been diagnosed in otherwise healthy athletes, military recruits and prison inmates.

The skin infections can be transmitted from person to person by contact with draining sores, or through contact with contaminated items or surfaces. MRSA generally causes mild skin infections, but in some cases has led to pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and a painful, flesh-destroying condition called necrotizing fasciitis.

Clusters of MRSA cases were seen in Ohio in June 2004, November 2004 and April 2005, involving 33 people. A four-person cluster was reported in Kentucky in May 2005 and a seven-person cluster was in Vermont in August.

Four of the patients were hospitalized, but all recovered, LeMaile-Williams said.

Ohio, Kentucky and Vermont require licensing for tattoo artists, but all the affected customers went to unlicensed artists. Instead of doing the work in tattoo parlors, the body art was done in the homes of the tattooists or the recipients, or even in public places such as a park.

The tattooists sometimes did not use masks or gloves, did not properly disinfect skin and did not properly clean the equipment. One Ohio tattooist used a homemade tattoo gun made from a computer ink-jet cartridge and guitar strings, LeMaile-Williams said.

Three of the Ohio tattooists had recently been jailed, she said.

Customers sometimes seek out unlicensed tattooists because their services are less expensive, or because they are younger than 18 and cannot go to a licensed tattooist without parental consent, she said.

Several of the infected patients were under 18, she added.

The tattoo cases are not surprising, said Dr. Kate Heilpern, an Atlanta emergency room physician and Emory University researcher who has studied MRSA.

The superbug is appearing in locker rooms, homes and many other unsterile places where people are in skin-to-skin contact.

“We are still riding a big wave of this bacterial infection and I really don’t see any end in sight,” she said.

I saw a scarification come in the doors of the shop today. The girl was fairly good looking until she showed us what her friend carved across the middle of her back. I had to tell her to put a hit out on that guy. I mean WTF is going on.... The State of Mississippi gave this guy a license to open up a shop down the street from me. I moved out of the state. Kent Keeton AKA (Dixie Devil) who claims Judy Parker is his aunt, and also says he's been on the cover of Tattoo Magazine...lol and also claims he worked for Gill Montie. I wish we had a website dedicated to cycling these fools pictures....... Just had to vent.

Back in NZ there was a case of Necrotising Fascititis from a traditional Samoan PE'A tattoo done with boars bone combs, that were probably only scrubbed between clients, the PE'A tattoo goes from knees to waist and everything in between. The poor client ended up losing 80% of his total body skin and fat to the disease and somehow lived, the Tattooist was harrasing his family for the rest of his money while the client was in hospital, the tattooist, scratcher sorry, didnt even speak english. I had a big scary Samoan bail me up in a bar and demand that I do his P'ea complete with 7 lines radiating out from his asshole, thanks to my stupid friend who told him I tattoo. No way, what a wierd thing to get done.

Just checking out your blog and saw about the MRSA infections here in VT... to top that off the Rutland Herald and the Burlington Free Press BOTH headlined their articles "TATTOO BUSINESS CAUSES STAFF INFECTIONS" ....you had to read almost to the end of the article to find out that it was drug dealers tattooing out of their kitchen........ so I wrote letters to the editors of each paper., and let fly that this was NOT a professional tattoo business, and should in no way be presented as that.!!!! This was a couple of crack dealers who got their hands on a machine and thought they knew how to tattoo... boy was I mad! Cant even tell you how many people here heard about it and asked me questions seeing as I own a shop.... rumors flew about which "shop" it was, etc... Just had to vent.. :):) sara

when i lived on the streets staph was a common thing amongst homeless people...its highly contagious and is transmitted from skin to skin contact.

so you get the initial infection site and then any other break in the skin will result in staph infected sores anywhere on the body and the shit is super painful...my body is littered with scars from where sores got infected and every time it had to be cured with antibiotics...before i got my chest piece cover-up i had a bad infection in the original tattoo which ended up being staph infection and the shit would oooze white pus and the scabs where a quarter inch off my chest, as a result of getting tattooed in a house high on dope....dumb ass kid right!!

you get what you pay for and in that case it was a free tattoo and fucking staph infection...be careful and stay clean!!!

MRSA was originally born in hospitals, and as the name, Methicillin-resistant staph aureous suggests it is a mutation of plain "old fashion" staph. It is extremely contagious and as state before exceptionally difficult to cure, require IV Vancomyacin ( a very potent antibiotic ) which in and of itself has many nasty side effects. Unfortunately MRSA has made its way out of the hospital and into our everyday lives, making it that much more important to maintain cleanliness at all costs. Anybody who would do a tattoo in a manner that could pass this infection on is not only putting his "customers" at risk, but anybody they come in contact with, then also is at risk. To put the importance of sanitation as simply as possible, I give you necrotizing fasciitis:

I have been Tattooing for 30 years and never seen that , but I have to say since I live in AZ ( not NJ ) the differance in weather must be what it is, (The heat) I never seen so many people have problems , when I worked at the shop near by people would come in wanting answers, I have seen some nasty results from people just not giving a shit. I love when a person looks right at you while they are rubbing there dirty fingers in there new Tattoo , wondering why it isnt healing right ! I think there shoulD be a test we could sell for people that tattoo, to test there Inks,I would think that there has to be a way to re-sterelize your Inks, They never come with a shelf life date...and should. Years ago, they tattooed out of a bocket ,using the same water and same bucket for many differant customers, Yikes huh ! Staff was the top known infection one would get. Not Aids, Not hept, STAFF, THE OLD TIMERS shared alot of stories with me.

MRSA just goes to show you how fucking nasty people really are as a whole. The majority of the cases are from the environment and not what is normally found on our bodies.

Staph is normally found all of our skin, anytime there is a break in the skin and it is not properly cared for a staph infection can occur. Also MRSA is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) but can most times be treated with one super antibiotic the problem is MRSA can mutate to VRSA, Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) which is virtually impossible to get rid off, both are highly contagious and can settle in any part of the body from tattoos to bones, to urine etc. These infection, like any can go septic, meaning consuming the body, leading to septic shock and death if not treated

i believe alot of fighter and wrestlers get it from the bacteria build up in their gear like on the ultimate fighter show. and alot of times when it starts to rot the skin it is wrongly diagnosed as a spider bite

MRSA This is a little scary! It can also be transmitted in hospitals, clinics, and other medical places that normally are thought as relatively clean places.
