Dying Peace.
My grandmother, our beloved matriarch.

Ella. Andy. Grammy B. Artist. Teacher. Mother. Dressmaker. Poet.

She stood by the sea and her mind stored the sensations of the salty wind and the warmth of the sand beneath her feet. A short distance down the shoreline, a jutted peninsula would finally become her subject...

She sat with her brown leather sketch pad, and carefully studied the rocks and the patterns the waves made as they crashed and frothed their way. Ebbing back in swirls and eddies, this woman watched the ocean intently and with complete joy. Her long hair blowing in the breeze, she felt a move within her spirit too, and counted all the blessings she could think of.

Her pencil began slowly and carefully, building in satisfaction and creative peace, the pace quickening. Shading and contrast she had been taught, but right now school was not on her mind. She only knew the need to pass this beauty from her senses to the paper..to praise and thank God for the gifts he was giving her.

Today this drawing, along with many other various works of art, lay on a table for all her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren to see. What a priveledge to see what she saw.

My grandmother is passed on into spirit now. But that means that her spirit lives on. I saw a picture of her today which was taken in 1938 on the steps of Framingham College. She was 22. Everyone said how remarkably similar my features are and that I look so much like her. When I am old, I hope I get the very same pure white hair she had.

She gave our family a truly fine example of how to live, and even more than that, she gave us a fine example of how to die in peace. Praise be I landed with her in life. The stories she told, the things she made, and the strength of character and amazing grace that she showed in life, will always be a part of me.

This is a great snapshot in time, Sara. It's so wonderful that you focus on the beautiful times and memories. Far too often when a person that was close to us finishes their earthly time, people focus on the loss, the gloom & doom and sadness of the day and the way that they passed. I have heard your point of view described as being all about the dash (-) You see on a tombstone the date a person was born then the dash and the day that they died. It truly is all about the dash because that dash represents their life and all the wonderful "snapshot" memories they left behind. The fact that she was a woman of strong faith & had a personal relationship with God also leaves you with the heartwarming knowledge of where her spirit is and that you will see her again.

We Love you Sara,

Ray & Sherry

Dragon’s Blood

Links us together in a chain that spans decades, continents and bad shoes!
Strengthens us, gives us hope, shows us the true value of achievement in one life.
Leaves us broken on the floor, yet gives us the power to get up again and again.

-------------

Here’s my candle – I’m burning it until the wick runs out.

Hugs & love, Lu.
