The alarm blares on and a brown hand reaches out from under the red blankets to silence it.
The blackness of the morning is broken only by the green numbers on the clock.
A yellow foot slowly slides out into the crisp air and creeps towards the edge of the bed – and stops. No more movement from the red cover or the brown hand or the yellow foot. The green numbers continue to change,
1 minute, 3 minutes, 7 minutes…
The alarm screams it's green numbered time and the morning begins.
The yellow foot and the brown hand are joined together by a body covered in tattoos – red, green, blue, purple, white.
The multi-colored woman walks on feet of yellow to a pink bathroom and turns the red and blue water knobs with her brown hands while her almond shaped fudge colored eyes see white steam billow around her. After showering – the woman stands at a steamed up metallic mirror and tames her shiny silver and coal black hair. A pat here, a push there, a spritz of sticky spray in strategic spots dulling the silver to gray and the coal black fades becoming the minority of color.
In the kitchen she pours a fragrant steaming cup of swirling black coffee into a chipped white mug and sips – the flavor sliding across her tongue like a cleansing river and she savors it, inhales it – and smiles revealing slightly yellowed teeth surrounded by dark brown lips and pale brown skin.
She readies herself for work. The colorful woman with the brown hand, the yellow foot, the red-green-blue-purple-white tattoos, fudge colored eyes, off-white teeth surrounded by dark brown lips and pale brown skin with shiny silver and black hair has been tucked away, sprayed away, painted on, powdered over, covered up and hidden, showing only a woman with tan skin, gray hair, brown eyes dressed in conservative dark blue and black.
This is acceptable.
This is what Asian is supposed to look like.
This is what is expected.
Her colorful self sighs in discontent while her still brown hand locks the tattered white door.
Acceptable walks out the door into the black and white world, a bruise upon her own skin.
