Johnny quoted in Garage #18 |
Just a quick FYI:
Issue #18 of Jesse James' Garage Magazine (http://www.garagemagazine.com/) is on the stands now, & it features an article on one of my early heroes, Shawn Kerri. Shawn was an artist at the genesis of the LA punk scene, & created art & graphics that have become the iconic watermarks of the movement, like the Circle Jerk's Skank Kid, & the Germs' Return poster. A lot of us (meaning poster artist types) thought she was dead, the rumor being that she had OD'ed back in 1998, & just recently news has surfaced that she's in fact alive, although in an unfortunately deplorable state.
The article is a complete history of Shawn's career as narrated by author Paul Grushkin, (Art of Rock, Art of Modern Rock, Rockin' Down The Highway) & features a quote from me about Shawn's influence, along with a shot of my 2002 Superbowl of Hardcore poster.
I'm partial to Paul's work,... 'The Art of Rock: From Presley to Punk' was like a Bible to me when I was still a kid, introduced me to some of my favorite artists, like Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, & of course, Shawn, whose featured prominently in the punk section of the book. Being included in the sequel 'The Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion' was like being asked to be the 13th apostle. Except with cooler friends. Paul also included me in his next project, 'Rockin' Down The Highway', & it's fun to be in the same book as cats like Tom Waits & Mike Ness.
Pick up an issue, & remember to live like it's your last day. |
