Book Haters, Please Read!!!! |
I just posted this on another forum where there is a big thread going regarding my book, and sharing info with others. Please take the time to read it, and all comments are welcomed!
Huck Spaulding has "Tattooing A to Z". The Godoy brothers did "Tattoo Machines & Their Secrets". Joey D has a book on tuning. Danny Fowler has a video series on machines. Lyle Tuttle has his seminars which I've heard are more like "Tea time with Lyle" than about machines (and the accompanying booklet is a joke). Danny Dringenberg & Todd Hlavaty do their machine building seminar (which you get chastised at if you ask questions). Now I do a book and everybody’s little panties are in a jumble. WTF?? I'm not the first and I'm sure I won't be the last to do a book.
I've never built any machines with anybody, excluding Hero, so any of the info contained in my book is MY knowledge....my knowledge that I'm free to do whatever I damned well please with it. I also have almost 35 years in this industry... a lot more "seniority" if you will, than ANY of the people whining about my book!! In fact, I've gotten the thumbs up on my book from Larry Hanks (35+ years and has worked with the Shaws), Ernie Carafa (40+ years and has built with Paul Rogers), and Doc Holliday (35+ years and worked with Zeke Owens). Between the 4 of us there is almost 150 years of experience in this industry, so who are you or anybody else to get pissed?? So if anybody has anything to say with MORE SENIORITY than me, speak the fuck up. If not, sit the fuck down! But at least quit hiding in the shadows of different forums and confront me in person. Strange how only 1 person has had the balls to actually confront me 1 on 1 about his concern with my book.
As far as me building 65 machines, yes 65 this year alone. All were hand built custom machines, not production runs. No prefabbed frames that somebody else is knocking out on a cnc for me. No production parts PERIOD, excluding coil cores, springs, caps, washers & screws. I challenge anybody to try to match those numbers. I don't know of any builders that dedicated to producing quality handmade machines. Nobody!! And no children, I'm not new at this. I've been tinkering with machines since before most of you were out of diapers yet!
As far as cutting my own throat, BS!!! I still continue to build and sell machines just like everybody else. I'm not so insecure in what I do that I'm afraid to share some of my info. I'm not worried about what the guy down the road is doing or selling. It has nothing to do with me. I will continue to do what I do regardless.
The entire problem is not with my book, but with the "bruised egos" that have been blemished by my efforts. Back in the day, people like Mike Malone and Paul Rogers would open the doors to anybody that showed a sincere interest in what they were doing. The great Paul Rogers was even known for bringing people into his garage to build and share ideas, just because they wanted to learn about machines. And he was eager to pass his knowledge onto the next generation. Why should I be any different? Where has that mentality gone today? Today, everybody seems to have try to be "one up" on the next guy in order to keep their own egos inflated. Well guess what, none of you are special, myself included! We're just fucking tattoo artists and some of us happen to build machines as well. We are not Gods, or any better than the next guy. We just are! There were many before us, and there will be many after us. I did my book as a sincere effort to pass the torch to the next guys, nothing more nor less. It's too damned bad that some of this industry feel they own the torch.
Why people think that now that my book is out there is going to be some major swarm of machine builders taking money out of the other guys mouth is beyond me. Reading a cookbook is not going to make you a chef. Reading a manual on restoring an old hawg is not going to make you a wrench! As we all know, it takes years to hone your skills at anything before you even begin to turn out a decent product! So everybody needs to lighten up a bit!
I wrote this response not to justify my actions, because I surely owe none of you a damned thing. But as a man felt the need to at least voice my opinions, since enough of you seem to be voicing yours! peace Dano

| Never had a book to learn with ,all I had was a pile of parts that my mentor pushed in front of me and said build a machine that runs. Now all I that ive learned was from trial and error and a few pointers from people that cared about the knowledge and how i used it. open your mind and ideas will come that work !!! |

When I went to Paul Rogers home in 1984 I couldnt afford to buy one of Pauls hand made machines. He told me to be there at 8am the next morning. He sent me under the shed to retrieve a steel plate and for the next two days I stood next to Paul hand cutting out frames using templates used from cigarette cartons, filing and grinding them till they were acceptable, hand winding coils that were fresh cut and tapped, and doing all the other tasks that were entailed. At the end of day two I had a running machi8ne and when I asked Paul what I owed him he just told me that I must never sell the knowledge that he gave me but must instead share it with all who asked for it. Fuck all them whining cunts. Ace |
