THE TRUTH ABOUT TATTOO ARTISTS THAT PIERCE |
OK, before I start I have a confession to make I AM or at least used to be a TATTOO ARTIST that also does piercing... In my defense though I started piercing over 13 years ago (when there weren’t an overabundance of piercers) and actually did work at a shop AS a piercer for over a year where I didn't tattoo, Which I honestly believe gave me a little insight on how tattoo artists interact with piercers... Which at times isn't in the most respectful manner.. My first point in this blog will be that Piercing IS its own art form and DESERVES respect.. Or at least skilled practitioners deserve respect... I can HONESTLY say in this area (JAMESTOWN, ERIE, and surrounding areas) there are less than a handful of people that I would trust as a piercer... Here is my opinion as to why there are so few good piercers..
LACK OF RESPECT OF THE ART FORM, not only from people in the industry but the public as well. Too many people will shop for the CHEAPEST not the best, and seem to have an attitude that any monkey can stick a needle in someone and do a piercing AS IGNORANT AS THAT IS; too many people DO have that mindset.. Which is why there are SO many bad piercings out there... Because of this there are many studios that do $25 piercings or run specials, have coupons, etc which is sad because it is REALLY hurting the something that is sacred to me... Here's what the person on the receiving end rarely takes into consideration...
There are SPECIFIC types and sizes of jewelry depending on the procedure and the individual - All of this can be extremely complicated and is not obvious to most clients when they are getting a procedure done...
When a cheap piercing is being done the "artist" is cutting as many corners as possible - YES they are using cheap jewelry, and NO they aren’t keeping up with the evolution of piercing, they want to make a quick buck..
unskilled Practitioners that don’t know what they are doing WILL lie to you - If you return to a place that did a substandard procedure on you more times than not rather than tell you that they don’t know what the problem is or admit fault WILL LIE TO YOU, they will tell you that the problems are YOUR fault and give you every excuse in the book...
Crooked or badly placed piercings look horrible there is nothing uglier than a crooked septum, wrong/midsized jewelry, floating navels etc, you may think you got a great deal, but is it really a great deal to spend $30 just to look like an idiot? As beautiful as body adornment can be, on the opposite side of the spectrum it can be UGLY AS HELL!
unskilled surface piercings, micro dermal s, skin divers can leave REALLY nasty scars and be dangerous if not done properly We recently have seen a disreputable shop in our area BLINDLY doing surface piercings with straight barbells, the recipients that we have counseled have been in a lot of pain and have had some of the NASTIEST scares imaginable --- yeah $30 well spent --- not to mention that by law we can’t give actual medical advice so we told some of these victims to consult a doctor....
My point of all of this is PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take enough pride in yourself, to go to a SKILLED PIERCER, NOT a cut-rate lowlife, .... NOT a tattoo "artist" that pierces on the side -.... and most DEFIANTLY NOT a kitchen magician!!! You’ll be glad you did your research and made the correct decision in the end... mark my words on that... There is SO much more to piercing than you may think, and unfortunately due to weak standards almost anyone can get a license to practice.. It's UP TO YOU to do your research, just because it's a "real shop" does NOT mean it's safe or the piercing/procedure is being done properly... ask about the training, ask about their apprenticeship, ask what their opinion is on the ASSOCIATION OF PROFESSIONAL piercers is, ask them if they are familiar with FAKIR MUSHAFAR, JIM WARD,GAUNTLET (if they look at you dumbfounded RUN AWAY).. The majority of tattooists that pierce DON'T care about piercing as a skilled profession... I'm ashamed that I used to do both and despite the fact that I feel that I do better piercings than the majority of so called "piercers" in the area. I DON'T do them anymore because I DO care about the industry and the art, at one time I was a REALLY good piercer but can admit that keeping up on tattooing is enough studying and hard work that I haven't kept up on piercing enough to be confident that I am keeping up with the ever-changing industry and insuring the high standard that the clients deserve. and I would rather NOT do something that do it substandard, so I leave piercing to the people at me shop that are focused on the art form SKILLED PIERCERS and I truly believe that it is a standard that should be upheld by a reputable, conscientious shop And I truly believe that My shop is all the better for it!
